Project Overview
The Green Line is a visionary streetscape landscape concept developed for Yanggao Road in Pudong, Shanghai. The project reimagines one of the city’s primary urban corridors as a vibrant green spine that integrates sustainable mobility, ecological infrastructure, and high-quality public spaces. Extending approximately two kilometres between South Pujian Road and Century Avenue, the proposal transforms a vehicle-dominated roadway into a people-focused environment that supports recreation, commercial activity, and everyday urban life. Design Vision
The design establishes a new identity for Yanggao Road by seamlessly connecting commercial districts, residential communities, and public destinations through an interconnected landscape framework. Inspired by the concept of “The Green Line,” the proposal creates a continuous sequence of elevated walkways, floating gardens, linear parks, and pedestrian-friendly spaces that encourage walking, cycling, and social interaction while significantly improving the overall urban experience. Landscape Strategy
The landscape strategy focuses on transforming existing transportation infrastructure into an active public realm. Elevated pedestrian walkways improve connectivity between both sides of the corridor while separating pedestrian movement from vehicular traffic. Floating gardens introduce generous planting and biodiversity into the urban environment, creating shaded recreational spaces and improving air quality. The concept of a “Road in the Park” reshapes the streetscape into a green boulevard that integrates planting, public seating, cycling routes, and community spaces into a cohesive landscape environment. The proposal addresses several existing urban challenges, including traffic congestion, fragmented pedestrian routes, limited public open space, and a lack of visual identity. Through integrated landscape design, the project creates a more connected, accessible, and attractive streetscape that strengthens the relationship between surrounding developments while establishing a distinctive gateway for Pudong’s rapidly evolving commercial district. Environmental sustainability forms the foundation of the design. Extensive tree planting, green infrastructure, ecological corridors, and climate-responsive landscape strategies contribute to improved biodiversity, reduced urban heat island effects, enhanced air quality, and sustainable stormwater management. By prioritising pedestrians and cyclists over private vehicles, the project promotes healthier lifestyles while supporting Shanghai’s long-term sustainability objectives. Design Features
The project incorporates elevated pedestrian walkways, floating gardens, linear parks, shaded plazas, cycling infrastructure, public gathering spaces, rain gardens, native planting, landscape lighting, integrated street furniture, ecological green corridors, and multifunctional open spaces that together create a contemporary urban landscape capable of supporting future growth and enhancing everyday city life.
